Five Georgia Players Sign Contracts

Georgia had five former football players sign NFL free agent contracts. Two other Georgia lettermen signed contracts with AFC teams. Sean Bailey of Alpharetta signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and Fernando Velasco signed with the Tennessee Titans. Four Bulldogs were drafted during the first seven rounds of the draft. Marcus Howard went to the Indianapolis Colts, Thomas Brown to the Atlanta Falcons, Chester Adams went to the Chicago Bears and Brandon Coutu went to the Seattle Seahawks. This gives Georgia 40 players who were selected during the past seven NFL drafts.The Georgia Bulldogs held their annual Spring game at Sanford Stadium on April 5 in front of almost 20,000 fans. The Red team, led by the UGA first-team offense and second-team defense, defeated the Black team 17-3. The Black team consisted of the UGA second-team offense and first-team defense. Several people had their Georgia Bulldog Wallets and Money Clips. Matthew Stafford completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to flanker Michael Moore to open up the scoring for the Red team. The Black team responded with a 47-yard field goal by Andrew Jensen. Michael Moore caught his 2nd touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter, this one from redshirt freshman Logan Gray. The last score came at the end of the half when Brian Behr booted a 52-yard field goal for the Red team. Stafford led all passers by completing 6 of 10 passes for 78 yards and one touchdown. Joe Cox, who started for the Black team, completed 7 of 11 passes for 69 yards. Redshirt freshman Caleb King led all rushers with 31 yards on 6 carries. Knowshon Moreno only rushed 3 times for 16 yards for the Red team. Expectations couldn’t be any higher for the Bulldogs, who came out of spring practice surrounded by national championship talk. Georgia returns most key components from an 11-2 record that ended with a 41-10 beating of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. Georgia fans had everything at the game that ranged from Georgia Bulldog Apparel and Belts to souvenirs.Junior quarterback Matthew Stafford who had 2,523 yards, 19 TDs and 10 INTs. Sophomore running back Knowshon Moreno who had 5.4 yards per carry, gave the Bulldogs an incomparable tandem.The defense, which allowed 20.2 points per game last year, looks faster and deeper. Playmakers abound, starting with linebackers Rennie Curran and Dannell Ellerbe, safety Reshad Jones and cornerback Asher Allen.The biggest question all spring was the offensive line. There are no seniors and just one junior on the two-deep depth chart.In the G-Day game, the line played well, giving Stafford plenty of time and opening holes for Moreno and redshirt freshman Caleb King. The result was a 17-3 win by the Red squad, which had the first-team offense."I thought it was as good as they’ve played all spring," offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said of the O-line.Georgia football fans got their first look at the 2008 edition of the Bulldogs when they had the annual G-Day game. Many people who were at the game had on different kinds of Georgia Bulldog Polo Shirts.  Proceeds from this year’s game went to the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens, a network of 13 Athens area churches and communities of faith providing shelter, meals and support for homeless families in crisis situations. This program continues an Athletic Association tradition begun in 1993 of donating proceeds from the G-Day game to a local charity or non-profit organization.Georgia returns 45 lettermen and 19 of 26 starters from the Allstate Sugar Bowl squad that rolled up a 31-point victory over No. 10 Hawaii.The Bulldogs finished with an 11-2 record in 2007, closing as one of the nation’s hottest teams, and wound up ranked No. 2 in the final AP poll and third in the final USA Today/Coaches Poll.“I think 2007 was exciting for our fans and our players,” Richt said. “I think we got a taste of just how close we might be toward getting that ultimate goal.”The Bulldogs got off to a slow start in 2007, losing twice in their first six games. But similar to the end of the 2006 campaign, the Bulldogs righted the ship with seven consecutive victories. Some fans have Bulldog souvenirs like Georgia Bulldog Watches and Clocks. University of Georgia defensive end Marcus Howard was selected in the fifth round of Sunday’s annual NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Howard was named the recipient of the Miller-Digby Most Outstanding Player award in Georgia’s Jan. 1, 2008, Allstate Sugar Bowl game victory over Hawaii. He was the first defensive player to win the award since Alabama’s Barry Krauss in 1979. Howard recorded four tackles, three sacks, two tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown in his final game in New Orleans.Charlie Cantor has been named a football recruiting assistant at the University of Georgia, head coach Mark Richt announced on Tuesday. Cantor previously served at Rutgers in the same capacity. Prior to his time at Rutgers, Cantor served a five-year stint at Florida State where he was a recruiting graduate assistant as well as an assistant with quarterbacks and tight ends. He was also a student manager for two seasons. Cantor has worked numerous football camps including the Bobby Bowden Football Camp, D-1 Football Camps and the Offense-Defense Football Camp. Cantor earned dual B.S. degrees in Sport Science Education and Sport Management from Florida State in 2006.Bulldog fans can’t wait until the season starts.     While I’m learning to play golf I also like to get in shape fitness wise. I wonder would cheerleading help me physically achieve a better golf swing? I’m not sure but it’s something to think about.
